Life can be unpredictable--school closings, vacations, or day carThinkstockPhotos-110884620e provider illness. When normal child care or school arrangements are disrupted or when a child is mildly ill, Backup Care providers can assist in your home or, in some cases, in a child care center.

Many IU employees have already been using the membership online search tools to find child and adult care providers and for assistance with senior care planning. Now a Backup Care benefit is available through the same webpage. Backup Care can assist families in finding last minute care providers at a reduced cost. To be eligible you must be a full-time Academic and Staff employee, Medical Resident, or an eligible Graduate Appointee and Fellowship Recipient.

What Is the Backup Care Benefit?

  • Each employee can request up to 15 days of child care per employee per year with copays of $6/hour for in-home care (4 hour minimum) or $15/per day/per child for in-care center (if a participating center is available in your area).

  • Once you’ve registered at, only two hours advance notice is needed to arrange care. Using this benefit is a two-step process, 1) register, 2) request care.


How Do I Register?

  • You won’t want to wait until you need care to register; register in advance!

  • Register now by following the steps at (employee ID required).

  • If you’ve previously signed up for the premium membership online caregiver search tools, the Backup Care registration is in addition to that registration.
How Do I Request Care?


Online: Select "Backup Child Care" on the menu page and submit your information and request. will then call you with a caregiver who meets your specific needs. You will also talk with the caregiver to confirm details.

Phone: Call 855-781-1303 during their in-call hours:

  • Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. – 8 p.m. EST
  • Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. EST
  • Sunday, 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. EST (for care needed the following day).


Are Backup Care Providers Qualified and Safe?

  • puts all providers through an extensive screening process including identity, references, and knowledge and experience.

  • References are checked by phone and Backup Care Specialists verify identity, check criminal records and the National Sex Offender Public Registry.

  • Candidates are then oriented on agency rules, procedures and expectations.

  • Once care has taken place, follows up with seekers to ensure that the caregiver has maintained high standards of care.
